Issues for surgery
Risk of oesophageal complication if continued during restricted fluid/nil by mouth (NBM) period (and post-operatively if patient unable to take with sufficient liquid – see Further information).
Risk of calcium containing kidney stones if insufficient fluid intake - see Further information.
Advice in the perioperative period
Elective surgery
Omit on the morning of surgery due to large volume of water needed to take dose.
Emergency surgery
If the patient has already taken doses of naftidrofuryl and is admitted for same day emergency surgery, bear in mind the potential increased risk of oesophagitis – see Further information.
Post-operative advice
Omit doses until patient can have capsules with the adequate fluid intake to enable safe administration and good diuresis - see Further information.

Further information
Oesophagitis
The administration of naftidrofuryl without sufficient liquid may cause local oesophagitis. The risk is greater with doses taken before bed. Hence the capsules should be swallowed whole during meals with a sufficient amount of water (minimum of one glass).
Calcium-containing kidney stones
Naftidrofuryl capsules can modify components in the urine promoting formation of calcium oxalate kidney stones, ensure patients drink sufficient water to maintain an adequate level of diuresis.
